About Our Daycare

Your pet will just love the wonderful play space we have created for them at The Pet Set, located at 2480 Briarcliff Road Atlanta GA 30329. Stop by for a tour anytime. Your first day in daycare is always complementary.

Newly remodeled (Nov 2020) both indoor and outdoor play areas by size. An indoor area, climate controlled of course, allows your dog to play and mix with other pets that have the same temperament. Our outdoor areas will allow your pet to get outside for some fresh air in a totally fenced in park like setting, complete with a play-time plunge pool (summer only).

All pets are always supervised by a pet care professional and are never left unattended. We separate pets by sizes and temperament into play areas. We limit our pet guests to small groups so we can give the one on one attention they deserve (think private school). Please remember, at this time we do not require dogs that socialize to be neutered or spayed. Pet Parents should assess the risks associated with intact animals in group play! We make NO GUARANTEES or PROMISES!

If you are interested in our Daycare Program, please fill out the on-line Daycare Application. Ask your veterinarian to fax or email your pets complete medical history Fax 404-636-4903 or Email thepetset@thepetset.com. Once we receive your application we will verify all the information that is provided by you and schedule an interview with you and your pet.

Please review As Needed Daycare Guest Forms and submit any that apply to your pet(s).

During the interview we will cover all our policies and procedures with you, answer all your questions, give you a tour of our facility, and provide you with the release paperwork.

After this interview we will schedule your pet for a 2 to 4 hour temperament trial period with other pets. Once you are approved for Daycare, you will have a K9 Passport to use when making your future Daycare and Boarding Reservations online or by telephone.

Frequently Asked Questions About Daycare

When should my dog start day care?

Puppy Day Care offers a great chance for your dog to play with other puppies 4 months old and up. This is wonderful for the developing puppy!

Are there any requirements for approving my pet for day care?

At The Pet Set, we conduct an interview process with you and your pet. Your pet then takes a temperament test. Once the pet and owners have passed these application requirements, the pet is approved for day care.

Will my dog socialize with other dogs?

At The Pet Set, your dog will exercise and socialize with other dogs. As a result, you'll have a happy and more fit dog. Activity levels at The Pet Set will also help reduce boredom behaviors such as chewing and barking.

Day Care is a good solution for separation anxiety, youngsters with tons of energy, and older dogs who need to go outside more often. We give medication, lunch (you can bring your own), while your dog is with us and we can accommodate special needs.

Will my dog get exercise while in day care?

The playground equipment at The Pet Set is designed for dogs with different levels of mobility for mental stimulation and confidence building. Many dogs like to be outside, even when the weather is bad, so we go out every day. Other dogs prefer to stay inside, which is fine also. Either way your pet will have plenty of time for exercise.

What if my dog is new to day care?

There is a careful introduction of newcomers in order to keep everyone happy and safe.

We accept dogs who are 4 months and older. Your dog must have completed their required shots and have received a bordatella vaccine. All shots must be kept current by the owner. Required shots for dogs include: DHLPP, Rabies, Bordetella, Corona.

We are selective on who we admit into daycare and boarding, we highly recommend pets over the age of 6 months be neutered and spade.

All dogs should come in on a leash and collar, or a travel bag. All felines should come to us in their travel bag.

Can I have my pet groomed or bathed while in day care?

As with children, your pet can get dirty playing all day so we offer optional bathing service for our guests. If you wish to have your pet bathed or groomed, please make arrangements for this before dropping it off for daycare. We typically do our Day Care animals late in the day so they go home looking the best they can.

What happens if I am running late to pick up my pet?

We close at 7:30 pm, Monday - Saturday and at 6:00 pm on Sunday. After long days of play, we all are tired, so please be prompt when picking up your pet. A late fee will be applied for every 15 minutes of delay. If you know you are running late, please be kind enough to give us a call ahead of time.

Day Care Play Time ends one hour prior to closing.

Can my pet get fleas in day care?

We flea spray the building and grounds with pet friendly all natural products, along with the checking dogs regularly. However, it is best to have your dog on a flea preventative. See our front desk staff for this service.

Dogs in Play and Rest

When should my dog start day care?

We all send our dog to daycare for the same reason – to make friends and burn off energy! So when a pet’s parent can’t find their dog playing in photos or on our live webcams, it can be confusing and frustrating.

Our goal is for all dog interactions to be safe, healthy, and balanced. Our primary tool for dealing with unbalanced interactions is redirection. If we are able to engage a dog, get their attention, and redirect them, then the dog is likely still in a healthy, learning mindset. As dogs become more aroused, anxious, or stimulated, they also become increasingly more challenging to redirect. This is when we tend to see unbalanced interactions and reduced inhibition control.

What is Arousal in Dogs?

When we talk about dogs being aroused or having our pack’s arousal level be high, we are referring to a state of physiological alertness and readiness for action. When a dog experiences a stressful situation, the arousal stays with them for a long timeWhen a dog experiences multiple stressful situations in close succession, the arousal from each situation builds on top of each other, or “stacks” After experiencing a stressful situation, it can take a dog up to 72 hours to process the arousal and get back down too “normal”!

Daycare is a stimulating environment, and, for many dogs, it is the most exciting thing they experience in their day-to-day routine. In order to help dogs cope with their excitement, our Pack Leaders utilize decompressing breaks. We strive to stay aware of each dog’s mental state, and we will give a dog a break at signs of unhealthy behavior. We know that if a dog is allowed to engage in an unhealthy behavior, it is learning that behavior. By staying consistent in giving breaks at early signs of over arousal, dogs will learn how to regulate their own play within the group and how to take breaks on their own.

When Does a Dog Need a Break?

Dogs showing unbalanced/unhealthy behaviors that we are no longer able to redirect through management or playroom tools may need a break.

Behaviors include:

  • Not reading other dogs’ cutoff/space signalsBullying behaviorReactivityExhibiting more and more aggressive space signalsFixationHigh intensity play without self-regulation or calming signals.
  • If we can identify what triggers a dog’s arousal, we can be proactive in keeping its arousal level low and giving breaks during times the trigger is present.

Triggers include:

  • Pick-ups/drop-offsOutside rotationShift changeMeal timeNew peopleThe pool/hose Certain dogs can be identified as needing more consistent breaks in order to be more successful in group play.

Special cases include:

  • Low threshold, or “small bucket” dogsDogs who are at daycare 5 days a weekYoung/adolescent dogs who are still developing their skill setsOvernight boarding dogsNew adult dogs who have never been to daycare.
  • By ensuring each dog is in a healthy mindset, we are able to teach the appropriate skills and behaviors they need to be successful in group play. Over time, many dogs become ideal daycare candidates with a full repertoire of tools at their disposal!
